A couple of green bargains
I know that the greenest thing to do is to not buy things, but sometimes I buy things. Like books. And shoes. I came across two deals today that I thought I’d pass along to you in case you need books or shoes (or just want them and want to buy them a little greener).
First up, Siel on MNN wrote about the online sale at Simple Shoes. Their eco-friendly shoes don’t always carry the friendliest price tag, but when Simple Shoes has a clearance, looks like they do it right. A lot of the sneakers and flip flops are college themed, but there are a few non-college themed shoes in the mix, too. The shoes pictured above – regularly $120 on sale for $20.

Next, Jennifer at Thrifty Mommy turned me on to Better World Books. The place is a bargain any day. They sell used books (used is greener than new), but today only (September 8th) they are discounting all their used books 15% in honor of National Literacy Day.
Better World Books collects and sells books online to fund literacy initiatives worldwide. Some of the books are new, some are used. All help fund literacy – excellent. According to their site they’ve raised over $7 million for global literacy so far and saved over 29,200,000 books from going into landfills. This looks like a site I’ll be checking into more when I’ve got the time.

Simple Shoes also sell fabric laptop bags, which I found when browsing around:

I LOVE books. I like to reduce on books by reading from the library first and only purchasing books I know I want to keep handy to refer to again. I end up buying mostly non-fiction. There are many places to buy used books. I like the idea of buying used and benefiting literacy though. I will keep this non-profit in mind for the future.
Allison,
I’m a used book nut, too. As a matter of fact, my most favorite day of the year is this Saturday. Our local library has a spectacular used book sale every September where they collect donations all year round and then sell hardbacks for $2 and paperbacks for $1 to raise money for the library.
